Willow Creek Composite High school announces 2020 valedictorian

Willow Creek Composite High School has named its Grade 12 class valedictorian for 2020.

On May 21, the school announced on social media that Nadine Thyssen will be this year’s valedictorian.

Principal Jackie Kark said even with the cancellation of classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the process for determining the valedictorian was not that different.

They still used school-awarded marks with March 13 as the cut-off, for this year’s marks, but their grades all through high school were considered for valedictorian and honour roll.

When they notified Thyssen, they did so through video conference.

“We still told her in person as much as we could,” Kark said.

Myrna Newman, a teacher at Willow Creek Composite High School, has known Thyssen since Grade 7, as a student and through the school yearbook.

“Over the years, I have watched Nadine become the confident and involved leader that she is today,” Newman said recently.

Thyssen has been the yearbook editor the past four years, and is an accomplished pianist.

She has been on every honour roll since her Grade 7 year and has received the top academic award every school year through junior and senior high.

She has earned additional credits through distance learning courses, work experience and special projects.

Thyssen also volunteers in a variety of ways in the community from recruitment director for a cancer fundraiser, and treasurer on the school’s graduation committee, to events at the Agriplex, Friendz Helping Friendz, and at the Legion’s Veterans’ Supper.

She played piano at the school’s Remembrance Day service and community volunteer appreciation, and volunteered as part of the camera crew at the summer FACES (Facilitating Awareness and Character-building Experiences for Students) summer education program put on by the Livingstone Range School Division.

“She is a generous leader, lifelong learner, self-starter and respected role model among her peers and community,” Newman said. “The combination of genuine integrity, human kindness, intellect and dependability assures that Nadine is an incredibly deserving young person.

“She is multi-talented in areas ranging from academics to the arts to technology.

“Whatever she chooses to learn, she excels at, due to her many powerful characteristics.”

In the fall she intends to study finance at the University of Lethbridge.
