Old school to be torn down

The former Claresholm Elementary School building, once identified as a possible town office and multi-use community building, will be torn down.

At its June 24 meeting, Claresholm town council agreed to  award the contract for the demolition of the old Claresholm Elementary School located at 5318 – 2nd Street West to OssaTerra Ltd. for $149,857.14.

The decision came after council reviewed a report from administration stating that at the town’s facility and infrastructure planning committee meeting on June 18, it was decided to recommend to council the tender for demolition of the building by OssaTerra.

As the renovation of the old elementary school is no longer proceeding, a quote for demolition of the building was obtained in the amount of $149,857.14, which does not include compacting/fill of the existing basement.

This price is based on non-road ban season, which may require fall demolition.

This also includes re-mobilization if it is determined the demolition would take place in two steps, the building then the slab/foundation.

Administration will ensure all relevant permits are issued and all utilities have been disconnected prior to the demolition of the building.

As remediation has already taken place, no other requirements are needed prior to the demolition.
