Job Title: Graphic Designer / Production Coordinator
Role Overview
The Graphic Designer at The Local Press is responsible for the visual heartbeat of our publication. This role involves designing impactful advertisements for local businesses, laying out weekly newspaper pages, and creating engaging digital content for our social media platforms. You will work closely with the editorial and sales teams to ensure that every issue is professional, visually appealing, and delivered on time.

Key Responsibilities
Newspaper Design & Production
Ad Creation: Design high-quality print and digital advertisements for local clients, ranging from small “business card” ads to full-page spreads. Sending proofs to clients in a timely fashion.
Page Layout: Execute the weekly layout of the newspaper, ensuring a clean, readable, and organized flow of news, photos, and advertisements.
Brand Consistency: Maintain and evolve the visual identity of The Local Press, including special edition covers and promotional materials.
Pre-Press Management: Prepare final files for print, ensuring all technical specifications (CMYK, resolution, bleeds) are met to avoid production delays.
Digital Assets: Create graphics for the website and social media to increase community engagement and digital reach.
Commercial Printing & Customer Service
Client Consultation: Work directly with the public and business owners to quote, design, and manage print orders (business cards, flyers, posters, carbonless forms, etc.).
Project Management: Oversee the lifecycle of commercial jobs from the initial inquiry to final pickup/delivery.
Problem Solving: Assist customers with file formatting and provide expert advice on paper stocks, finishes, and print feasibility.
Team Collaboration & Operations
Team Synergy: Actively support the sales and editorial departments to meet collective goals; we win as a team.
Production Support: Assist with basic finishing work (cutting, binding, folding) as needed to ensure customer deadlines are met.
Workspace Management: Keep your office and other workspaces organized and welcoming for walk-in traffic.

Required Skills & Qualifications
The “People” Factor:
Excellent communication skills and a genuine desire to help people bring their projects to life.
Multi-tasking Mastery: Ability to manage a retail counter and walk-in customers while maintaining focus on long-term design deadlines.
Software Expertise: Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, and Illustrator), and QuarkXpress. Mac OS including mail, server login and file management.
Typography & Layout: A strong eye for typography, hierarchy, and design in a print environment.
Team Spirit: A “no task is too small” attitude and a willingness to jump in where the team needs you most.
Deadline Management: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with strict weekly deadlines.
Detail Oriented: Exceptional proofreading skills and attention to technical file accuracy.
Community Mindset: An interest in local storytelling and helping small businesses grow through great design.

Preferred Experience
Experience in the newspaper or printing industry.
Experience with digital ad management or web design (WordPress).
