Jason Hemmaway is the 2025 Claresholm Citizen of the Year.
He was honoured with the award at the Volunteer Appreciation event at the Claresholm Community Centre on April 14 hosted by Claresholm and District Family and Community Support Services.
Connie Quayle, last year’s citizen of the year, presented the award.
She opened by noting Hemmaway is someone whose dedication, generosity, and community spirit can be felt across nearly every corner of the town. Almost everyone in town knows him – whether through a project, an organization, or one of the many roles he has taken on over the years.
“Jason’s commitment to community service began early in life,” Quayle said.
In his younger years, he was deeply involved in 4-H, alongside farming and curling.
After graduating from high school, Hemmaway attended Lethbridge Community College and went on to show cattle for Cudlobe Angus for 15 years, demonstrating his strong agricultural roots and dedication to excellence.
Throughout his adult life, Hemmaway has been consistently and actively involved in the Claresholm community.
His contributions include long-standing service with the Claresholm Curling Club, Kinsmen Club of Claresholm, Winterfest, and 4-H shows.
“Jason doesn’t simply volunteer – he steps up where help is needed and quietly ensures things get done,” Quayle said.
Hemmaway has been involved with the Claresholm Curling Club for many years and has served on its board for an extended time.
He was instrumental in organizing the renovation of the upstairs area of the curling club and continues to support club events by bartending, cooking for bonspiels, and working the concession whenever asked. His willingness to contribute in any capacity makes a significant difference to the success of the club.
As a committed member of the Claresholm Kinsmen, Hemmaway has been very active in fundraising efforts and has held several leadership positions within the organization.
He also contributed his time as a member of the Lions Club for a period, further reflecting his devotion to service.
Hemmaway has been a valued member of the Claresholm Fire Department for many years.
Even after experiencing a serious accident, he continues to give back by assisting with training and contributing to fundraising events such as the Firemen’s Golf Tournament.
“A true testament to his resilience and sense of responsibility,” Quayle said.
His passion for 4-H also never faded.
Hemmaway has helped with 4-H shows for many years and is always willing to share his knowledge with young participants.
“He has a natural ability to connect with kids and encourage them,” Quayle said. “Making a lasting impact on the next generation.”
During his time as a town bylaw officer, Hemmaway was known for his fairness and compassion. He consistently gave people a chance, often dedicating his own personal time to help others navigate challenges and resolve issues.
“Jason Hemmaway is one of the rare individuals who will help with absolutely anything – and always with a smile,” Quayle said.
“He is incredibly organized, dependable, and genuinely cares about the people and wellbeing of Claresholm.
“His quiet leadership, tireless volunteerism, and positive attitude make him an exceptional role model.”
