The Claresholm Cowboys remained perfect on home ice this season, with a win in United States Premier Hockey League action on Friday night.
The Cowboys hosted the Calgary Bandits on Oct. 9, winning by a score of 5-2.
After Calgary opened the scoring, the Cowboys tied it on a goal by Dustyn Stoesz, assisted by Lucas Giveen Gomes De Reis and Mario Hernandez-Mellin.
Claresholm took the lead three minutes later on a goal by Stoesz with help from Dante Rock and Leonid Pashinin.
The score remained 2-1 for Claresholm as the teams skated into the first intermission.
The Cowboys took control in the second period with two goals less than a minute apart.
Rock scored on the power play with 17:44 to play, assisted by Jake Gislason, then Kaleb Beauregard scooped up a loose puck and skated in all alone on the Bandits goalie 36 seconds later, making no mistake to increase Claresholm’s lead to 4-1.
Giveen Gomes De Reis earned an assist on the play.
There would be no further scoring, leaving the score 4-1 for Claresholm after 40 minutes of play.
Calgary would close to 4-2 a minute into the third period, but got no closer.
Beauregard would restore Claresholm’s three-goal lead with 11:38 to play, and there would be no further scoring, making the final score 5-2 for the Cowboys.
Goaltender Ryan Myers stopped 37 of 39 shots to record the win in net for Claresholm.
Bassano 5 Claresholm 4
The Cowboys suffered their only loss of the season, so far, a 5-4 decision in Bassano on Oct. 3.
Bassano lead 1-0 after the first period, and upped their lead to 3-0 before Claresholm responded with a power play goal by Kaden Devlin assisted by Braden Wilson and Samuel Lamb, to cut the Beaver lead to 3-1.
Bassano made it 4-1 a minute later, before Claresholm’s Vitali Kobylnik scored, assisted by Leonid Pashinin and Dustyn Stoesz, to make the score 4-2 for Bassano after 40 minutes.
The Beavers increased their lead to 5-2 just over two minutes into the third period, but Claresholm made a game of it.
Devlin cut the Beaver lead to 5-3 with 6:35 to play, assisted by Wilson and Kaleb Beauregard, then Kobylnik made it really interesting, cutting the deficit to 5-4 with 42.3 seconds left in the game.
He was assisted by Devlin and Stoesz.
However, the Cowboys could get no closer and fell by that 5-4 score.
Goaltender Ty Scott stopped 29 of 34 shots for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys’ next home game is Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Claresholm Arena when the Onion Lake Scouts pay a visit.
