High school girls open basketball season

The Willow Creek Composite High School junior and senior high girls’ teams faced a tough test as they opened their season in the Chinook Basketball League last week.
The Cobras hosted the Picture Butte High School Queens on Nov. 29, where the junior varsity team lost by a score of 61-34.
The Queens took control early, leading 22-9 after the first quarter, 39-12 at halftime, and 45-24 after three quarters.
Scoring for the Cobras were Chantel Red Young Man with 15 points; Hayley Bronson with six points; Abbey Biteranta with five points; Jessica Mackin and Tori Stonehouse with three points each; and Kiana Starling with two points.
The senior varsity Cobras also faced a tough test, losing by a score of 55-21.
The Queens led 20-4 after the first quarter, and never looked back, leading 28-12 at the half, and 47-15 after three quarters.
Scoring for the Cobras were Janell Lange with nine points; Hannah Leader with four points; Chantel Red Young Man with three points; Lina Restrepo and Kiana Starling with two points each; and Jessica Mackin made a foul shot.

High school boys open basketball season


The Willow Creek Composite High School boys’ junior and senior varsity boys’ teams were in tough against a Lethbridge team as they opened their season last week at home in the Deep South Basketball Conference.
The Cobras hosted the Winston Churchill Bulldogs on Tuesday, Nov. 28, where the junior varsity team, made up of Grade 10 and 11 players, dropped a tough 76-69 decision.
Claresholm led 16-15 after the first quarter, but fell behind 36-31 by halftime.
The Cobras trailed 62-48 after three quarters but rallied in the final period to close the gap before losing by that 76-69 score.
Scoring for Claresholm were Ethan Hall with 26 points; Zak Wright with 19 points; Logan Hurlburt with nine points; Henry Leishman and Kael Smith with four points each; Ben Baker, Tyce DeJong, and Syler Sabey with two points each; and Rylen Guitton hit a foul shot.
The senior varsity Cobras had a much tougher time, falling to a bigger, stronger more experienced team by a score of 92-62.
The Bulldogs led 20-15 after the first quarter; 46-30 at half time; and 76-42 after three quarters.
Scoring for the Cobras were Zak Wright with 16 points; Lucas Read with 14 points; Hayden McClung with nine points; Merrick Whelan with eight points; Ethan Hall with six points; Owen Van Dellen with five points; and Blake Davis with four points.
