Council updated on aggresive wildlife in town

By Rob Vogt
Claresholm town council has received more information on how residents can respond to concerns about wildlife activity in town.
At its Nov. 14 meeting, council reviewed a report from administration explaining that in regards to the concerns with the deer population in Claresholm, the bylaw department has reached out to Alberta Fish and Wildlife.
The process when Fish and Wildlife receive inquiries, concerns, and/or complaints is to begin an investigation. There are many factors that go into determining concerns on private property.
Whether wildlife is being provoked or if animals are overly aggressive is just one area they would investigate.
It was noted this is difficult if the animal is no longer in the area and can be unfortunate if injuries occur to either a pet or wild animal.
Fish and Wildlife suggest residents check in yards and other spots prior to letting pets out, as they may startle wildlife. Even fenced yards may have animals in them, and they may view a pet as a threat if approached, especially if they have young nearby.
Residents should report any encounters with wildlife to 1-800-642-3800.
They can also go online at www.alberta.ca/report-poacher (no dashes or spaces).
The Fish and Wildlife office that services Claresholm is in Pincher Creek, and can be reached at 1-403-562-3289.
It was also pointed out that wildlife come into town for protection, fruit in trees, and other reasons, so education regarding urban wildlife is important.
The provincial website has a wealth of information and tips for urban wildlife at the link below.
This has been shared within the “Town News” in the Claresholm Local press for residents’ information as well. The town website has this information under public notices and also shared it to Facebook.
