Lorna Alsgard named 2022 Stavely Citizen of the Year

Someone with a love of children has been named the 2022 Stavely Citizen of the Year.
Lorna Alsgard was honoured with the award during the intermission of the Stavely Amateur Rodeo on Saturday, Aug. 27.
Brian Nelson, exalted ruler of the Stavely Elks who look after the award, read out the reasons Alsgard won the award.
“As most of you know, this award to recognize people who go ‘above and beyond’ to make our community what it is, started out back in 1966 as the Danny Flanagan ‘Sportsman of the Year Award.’ About 30 years ago, it evolved to be the ‘Citizen of the Year’ and is donated by our Elks Lodge,” Nelson began.
“So – the person that was nominated and chosen this year is one that is typically in the background, behind the scenes helping out in all sorts of ways.
“A long-time member of this community, this person has given so much to youth programs, play school, skating club, home schooling, summer fun. The list goes on.
“She is currently a member of the museum board and is always helping with projects around the museum and continues to make sure that the museum’s wedding chapel is always ready for visitations or for use for various functions.
“She is a Past Noble Grand of the now-defunct Rebekah Lodge and is well known among the seniors around town for just showing up and helping out with many chores that some seniors find difficult.
“She is also known for finding clothes for children in need.
“There are so many things that we take for granted and tasks that are taken care of daily, by individuals that are constantly working in the background in order to help others enjoy a better life.
“Tonight we are recognizing one of those people.”
With that, Nelson presented the 2022 Stavely Citizen of the Year award to Lorna Alsgard.
She then made her way to the microphone to say a few words.
