On Canada Day, the Granum Historical Board organized a show and shine motorcycle event that was held in front of the Granum Old Jail and Museum.

Our board member, Jacquie Connor, was in charge of this first time event and she did an excellent job. Not only did we have 25 motorcycles registered but Jacquie also had 11 vendors who set up their tents in the museum area.

The theme of this year’s show was “Granum a Community United Against Abuse and Bullying”. Through an FCSS grant we were able to produce large shirt buttons to give away advertising that we as a town are against child abuse and bullying. It was great to see many of the bikers as well as our museum guests sporting their buttons. We also passed out educational booklets on child abuse and bullying for parents. These booklets were provided by the Canadian Red Cross.

We estimated that the number of bikers including their followers plus all the vendors brought at least 100 new people into our town and this does not include the number of people who came to Granum to view the motorcycle show.

The motorcycle club called Bikers Building Bridges from Lethbridge was in attendance as well as the Royal Canadian Legion from Vulcan and the Kinsmen Club from Coaldale. The Kinsmen were holding a raffle for a new Harley Davidson motorcycle.

We also estimate we had between 100 and 150 guests tour the Granum Old Jail and Museum. It was a very successful day for Granum, and the Granum Historical Board was very proud to contribute to our town’s Canada Day celebrations. Plans are already in place for next year’s show. Positive comments we received from the bikers indicate that next year’s show will be well attended and will be bigger and better than ever.
