September 27, 1929 – April 30, 2018
Vera Anna Mattoon, beloved wife of the late Don Mattoon, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre, on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the age of 88 years.
Vera was born on September 27, 1929 in Claresholm, Alberta to Gustav and Johanna Maurushat. She was the eldest of three children, a big sister to two brothers.
Vera met the love of her life, Don, in Claresholm, while Don was a flight instructor at the air force base and shortly after they met, they were married on July 6, 1957. The family was complete when they had two children together, Kelly and Patty.
Vera was a lifelong educator. She began her teaching career at Alston School in 1948 and retired 37 years later from Claresholm Elementary School in 1985. Vera touched many lives and we will miss her kind, generous and compassionate spirit.
Vera is survived by her son Kelly (Tracey) and her daughter Patty. She also leaves behind three grandchildren whom she adored- Matthew, Kayleigh and Kelsey. Vera is also survived by her sister-in-law Audrey Maurushat and nephews Scott and Michael; Don’s sisters Freda Tarrant and Phyllis Stewart and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vera was predeceased by her loving husband Don in 2002, her parents and two brothers.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre in Claresholm for their compassionate care.
A Private Family Interment will take place at the Claresholm Cemetery prior to the service.
A Memorial Service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church (4304-2 Street West, Claresholm) on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Donna Alm officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 2P5) in Vera’s name would be gratefully accepted.
