The Willow Creek Composite High School “A” girls volleyball team won their home tournament this past weekend with a thrilling victory in the final over Canmore.
The Cobras welcomed teams from High River, the Piikani Nation, Canmore, Fort Macleod, Picture Butte, Nobleford and the Kainai Nation for a one-day tournament on Saturday, Sept. 27.
The Cobras opened with a win over Senator Riley School of High River by scores of 25-5 and 25-10.
They followed that up with a win over Piikani Nation Secondary School by scores of 25-6 and 25-4.
Claresholm concluded round-robin play, splitting with Canmore Collegiate High School, losing the first set by a score of 25-209 before winning the second set by a score of 25-19.
The results gave the Cobras first place in Pool A, a bye through the first round of the playoffs to the quarter-finals.
They faced Kainai High School in that quarter-final, winning in straight sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-7.
That win put the Cobras in the semi-finals against Picture Butte, which Claresholm also swept by scores of 25-9 and 25-5.
Awaiting the Cobras in the final were the Canmore Wolverines, who were the only team all day to win a set from the Cobras.
The teams went back and forth in a tough final, trading point for point much of the way.
After the Cobras took the first set by a score of 25-16, the Wolverines rebounded to win the second set by a score of 26-24.
That set up a third and deciding set to 15 points, with the Cobras winning out by a score of 15-11 to win the tournament.
