Junior varsity Cobras take ‘B’ championship at home tournament

The Willow Creek Composite High School junior varsity girls’ volleyball team sent their fans home happy, taking the “B” championship of their home tournament on the weekend.
The Cobras welcomed 16 teams from Picture Butte; two from Pincher Creek; Milk River; Nobleford; Coaldale; two from High River; Magrath; Fort Macleod; Bow Island; Stirling; Vulcan; Canmore; and the Crowsnest Pass for the annual,Cobra Classic on Oct. 18 and 19.
The host Cobras lost their opening match of round-robin play to Nobleford by scores of 25-21 and 25-13.
They were again swept in their second match by Coaldale Prairie Winds Secondary school by scores of 25-20 and 25-13.
The Cobras wrapped up round-robin play on Friday night by splitting with Notre Dame of High River. They won the first set by a score of 25-20 before Notre Dame rallied to win the second set by a score of 25-17.
The results put Claresholm in fourth place in Pool “B” and on the “B” side of the playoffs.
The Cobras opened the playoffs against Picture Butte.
The match was set to start at 12:45 p.m., but Picture Butte was not there, and risked complete forfeit.
By the time they arrived, it was late enough they forfeited the first set.
The Cobras then won the second set by a score of 25-12 to win the best-of-three match in two straight sets.
The win put Claresholm in the semi-finals against the Senator Gershaw Gators of Bow Island, who the Cobras defeated by scores of 29-27 in a thriller, and 25-20, to win the match.
Awaiting them in the final were the Highwood Mustangs of High River.
The Cobras took control early, cruising to a 25-9 win in the first set, and a 25-21 victory in the second set to win the “B” championship.
Magrath won the “A” championship defeating Coaldale Prairie Winds Secondary school in the final.
