The Claresholm Cobras peewee football team punched their ticket to the second round of playoffs with a thrilling win at home last week.
The Cobras hosted the Cardston Cougars under the lights at the “Snake Pit” at the Willow Creek Composite High School field on Thursday, Oct. 10, winning by a score of 28-14.
Thomas Baird got Claresholm on the scoreboard with a touchdown in the first quarter, capping off a drive that went 11 plays for 83 yards.
That 7-0 lead held up, as the Cobras went into the halftime break with that 7-0 lead.
Part way through the third period, Claresholm quarterback Cohen Smith hooked up with Baird for a pass-and-run touchdown and a 14-0 lead after three quartes.
That set up a wild and exciting fourth quarter.
After the Cougars cut the Cobra lead to 14-7, Baird ran for 32 yards and a touchdown with just 1:32 to play to give Claresholm a 21-7 lead.
On the ensuing kick off, Cardston took the ball all the way down to the Claresholm nine-yard line, punching it in with 47.9 seconds to play, cutting the Cobra lead to 21-14.
However, Baird snuffed out any hopes of a Cougar comeback, scoring his fourth touchdown on the last play of the game, to give Claresholm the 28-14 victory.
The Cobras, who finished second in the “B” Division of the Southern Alberta Minor Football Association, will now hit the road to play the first-place Coaldale Spartans on Oct. 21.

Turkey Bowl
Both the Claresholm bantam and peewee football teams played their annual Turkey Bowl against the Pincher Creek Mustangs on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 14 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.
The bantam Cobras won by a score of 40-12, while the peewee Cobras won by a score of 21-7.

Bantam playoffs
According to the Southern Alberta Minor Football Association website, the bantam Cobras finished third in the nine-man division, and are slated to host the sixth-place Pincher Creek Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the “Snake Pit”.
However, the website was not updated at press time.
