A long-time community volunteer is the 2019 Stavely Citizen of the Year. Dale Ohler was presented with the award during the intermission of the Stavely Amateur Rodeo at the Stavely Arena on Saturday, Aug. 24, by Ian Sundquist of the Stavely Elks who looks after the award.
He explained Ohler has lived in the community his whole life, and has always been willing to lend a hand. Ohler sat on the Stavely minor hockey board, served as president and coached. Once his children had moved on, he joined the board of Foothills AA Bisons hockey. He also volunteered with Stavely figure skating and at a variety of school events while his children were involved in both. Another focus for Ohler was the Stavely/Parkland 4-H Beef club, where he was involved for more than 20 years. He served as a leader and volunteer, sharing his knowledge with members. “He was passionate about this club,” Sundquist said. In 1997, Ohler joined the Stavely Agricultural Society, becoming a director in 2001, and is still a director. He has also served as president and vice-president. During that time he has helped with upgrades to the arena, volunteered at the horse show and amateur rodeo, and used to supply the sheep for the mutton bustin’. He has also been valuable in writing applications for grants. Ohler joined the Stavely Elks in 1980, and has been involved with them, including as a marshall at their annual pheasant derby. He sat on the Southern Angus Association Board, helped locals train their working cow dogs, and spent many hours sharing his knowledge during calving season.
