The Willow Creek Composite High School junior high “A” girls volleyball team won the championship of their home tournament this past weekend.
The girls hosted their annual Cobra Classic tournament on Saturday, Sept. 26, welcoming teams from the Crowsnest Pass, Vauxhall, Nanton, Mountainview and Lundbreck.
In round robin play. the Cobras split with Crowsnest Consolidated High School of the Crowsnest Pass, losing the first set by a score of 25-18 but winning the second set by a score of 25-10.
They also split with Vauxhall, losing the first set by a score of 25-21 but winning the second set by a score of 25-11.
The results gave Claresholm first place in Pool “A’, and a bye to the tournament semi-final
Awaiting them in that semi-final was Vauxhall, who came ready to play.
The Vikings won the first set by a score of 25-16 and looked like they had Claresholm on the ropes.
However, the Cobras responded by jumping out to an early 9-4 lead in the second set and cruised to a 25-14 victory to force a third-and-deciding set.
The teams traded points much of the way, but Claresholm prevailed by a score of 15-12 to win the match 2-1 and advance to the final against Mountainview.
The first set was a nail biter. The Cobras jumped out to a 22-16 lead only to have the Colts erase it and tie the game at 23-23, forcing Claresholm to call time.
The Cobras came out of that time out determined and scored two straight points to win the set by a 25-23 score.
The second set was just as close as the teams went back and forth, with Mountainview leading 22-19 and poised to tie the match.
That did not happen.
The Cobras rallied to tie the game then won it by a score of 26-24.
The victory gave Claresholm the championship of their home tournament.
