Cobra boys defeat Flyers in home tournament

It is not always how you start but how you finish, and the Willow Creek Composite High School senior varsity boys’ basketball team finished strong in their final game of a tournament they hosted this past weekend.
The Cobras welcomed teams from Fort Macleod, Brooks, High River, Cardston, Coalhurst, and two from Taber for the tournament held Feb. 9 and 10.
Claresholm faced the F.P. Walshe Flyers on Saturday afternoon in their final game of the tournament, winning by a score of 78-44.
The Cobras jumped out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter, led 48-22 at halftime, and 68-31 after three quarters.
Scoring for Claresholm were Lucas Read with 31 points; Hayden McClung with 22 points; Ethan Hall with nine points; Blake Davis and Merrick Whelan with five points each; and Tyce DeJong, Syler Sabey, and Moses Smith with two points each.
The Cobras opened the tournament in the feature game Friday night against the Highwood High School Mustangs of High River.
It was a wild, high-scoring affair that came down to the wire before the Mustangs prevailed by a score of 84-82.
Read again led the scoring with 34 points; McClung scored 21 points; Hall had 10 points; Owen Van Dellen had eight points; Whelan had seven points; and Zak Wright had two points.
That result put Claresholm in a game Saturday morning against Taber Christian, and the Lions won by a score of 88-69.
Scoring for the Cobras were Read with 21 points; McClung with 16 points; Whelan with 14 points; Hall with five points; DeJong with four points; Sabey with three points; and Davis, Smith and Van Dellen with two points each.
