Claresholm’s Got Talent for a good cause

By Rob Vogt
Do you have a talent you want to show the community? Do you want to help raise money for two great causes?
You will have your chance on Saturday, Feb. 24, when Casa Roma Cares hosts “Claresholm’s Talent” Competition.
In addition to the competition, the night will feature Stavely singing sensation Mariya Stokes.
People of all ages and talents are welcome to register, at no cost.
The winner will be determined by a panel of judges including Stokes.
George Douros, the owner of Casa Roma, said he has attended community plays, the skating carnival, and concerts.
“We’ve got tremendous talent (in this community),” he said.
Proceeds from the event will go to support Dakota Henshall and Tristen Mackin.
Henshall is a local woman involved in a head-on collision before Christmas with a semi-truck, while Mackin is a local man recovering from serious injuries sustained during a recent rollover truck accident.
“We wanted to have a talent show and turned it into a fundraiser,” Douros said.
Moreover, Stokes is a local talent who has gone on to make her mark in the music world.
Douros said she is the right person to celebrate local talent because she is local.
She also played one of her first ever gigs at Casa Roma when she was starting out, so the event will be a homecoming of sorts.
Douros said Stokes is also a great example to others of how to accomplish their goals.
“If you set your mind to it and work towards it, you can do it,” he said.
Doors open at 5 p.m. with cocktails, dinner starts at 6 p.m., and the competition starts at 7 p.m.
Anyone interested in entering the talent competition can register by e-mailing their name, age and talent to claresholmkinettes@gmail.com (no dashes or spaces).
Tickets are $75 per person and available at Casa Roma and the Claresholm Local Press.
