Vegter, Albert

Albert (Albertus) Vegter of Claresholm, beloved husband of the late Barbara Vegter, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2023 with his family by his side.
Albert was born in Holwierde, Netherlands on May 17, 1927. He was the fourth of twelve children. He immigrated to Canada in 1950 at the age of 23.
He met the love of his life at a church picnic in Iron Springs. He and Barb were married in 1954 and were rarely apart for their entire 67 years of marriage.
Together they raised four sons, Charlie (Debbie), Harvey, Arnold (Chiki) and Edward (Melanie). He loved his grandchildren; Angela and Melanie, Landon (Erin), Alyssa (Chris), and Vanessa (Lindsey), Kaitee (Tyler), Scott (Kendra) and Eric (Georgia); and great grandchildren, Janelle, Cole, Deah and Evan, dearly. Albert is also survived by his sister Tina (Marinus) Ekkel and brother Cor (Phyllis) Vegter.
Albert worked for a number of farmers in the Iron Springs and Turin area during his first years in Canada. In 1965, he settled his family in Claresholm and started his career as a baker, eventually opening A & B Bakery. Albert, Barb and the family supplied the community with fresh baked goods for 42 years until he retired at 80 years of age.
Albert’s faith and his love of the Lord was an essential part of his life. He was an active member of the Granum Christian Reformed Church.
Albert had a passion for many activities. He enjoyed camping, boating, bowling and church activities. He also loved to sing and was a member of both the Claresholm Community Choir and the Granum CRC Choir. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time travelling, golfing, swimming and gardening, as well as touring on his motorbike until age 86, with Barb as his passenger.
In 2014, Albert moved to the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre where he resided until his passing.
Albert’s family would like to thank the staff at the WCCCC for the love and compassion shown to both he and Barb. Many thanks also to Pastor Henry Veldboom for his support, visits and encouragement. Albert rarely forgot a face and would always greet people by name when he saw them and was thankful for the many visits he received from friends and family.
