Editor wins award sports reporting

For more than 21 years, Rob Vogt has covered sports at Willow Creek Composite High School.
The editor of the Claresholm Local Press was recently recognized by the Alberta Schools Athletic Association with the 2023 Media Recognition Award for those years of service to high school athletics in Alberta.
The award was presented at a ceremony on June 15 in Nisku, where he was able to accept in person and say a few words.
He described how he has three passions.
His most important one was to Marcella Snell, who was taking photos for him because he usually is on that side of the camera covering events such as this.
“For anyone who’s in a relationship, there’s always the people at home waiting for you when you’re out in the gym or on the pitch or wherever, so my biggest thanks go out to her,” Vogt said.
He turned his attention to the Alberta Schools Athletic Association and the 21-plus years he’s been involved covering high school sports.
“It’s been amazing and it’s going to keep on going because I’m not going anywhere,” he said.
His second passion is for student sport and athletics and the values that sport can teach.
“It can be about more than just putting the ball in the basket,” he said. “It can be about teamwork, about accountability, relationships, everything.”
He said he was fortunate because his third passion was newspapers.
“Telling stories,” he said. “And hopefully getting the story of how great athletics can be out to the public.”
He concluded by expressing his appreciation to the Alberta Schools Athletic association for the award.
