Claresholm hires new, full-time fire chief

Claresholm town council has brought back a full-time fire chief position, and has appointed someone with experience to fill the position.

The Town of Claresholm announced on Jan. 17 that at the last regular meeting of Claresholm town council held Jan. 14, a decision was made to create a full-time fire chief position and to appoint Sean Kelly to the new position.

The appointment of Kelly came on the recommendation of the members of the Claresholm Fire Department.

The statement noted this decision has evolved from the amount of time and work necessary to perform this position to the standards required. The responsibility and liability issues the town, its fire and emergency services department and its fire fighters are faced with continue to affect and determine the long hours required of the fire chief position.

Because of the time commitment required by the fire chief, it was stated the town has determined a volunteer position is no longer a realistic option.

The town believes a full-time fire chief will ensure the proper management of all aspects of the fire and emergency services critical to the safety and quality of life of the community.

There is an ever-increasing administrative workload related to the management of resources including reporting, inspections, inventory and maintenance of equipment and public education that has led to volunteer burnout in the past.

Kelly has been a member of the Claresholm Fire Department since 2012 and has been developing his skills and knowledge since then in many different aspects.

The statement noted council wished Kelly the best in his new position.
