In late December, a group of Grade 3, 4 and 5 boys from Claresholm decided they wanted to learn to play basketball.

They talked their parents into letting them form a team and the Claresholm Mini Cobras were born.

Coached by Dahlin Sabey and Brad Baker these boys made it a goal to attend the Alberta Basketball Youth Provincials hosted in Edmonton the weekend of March 9 to 11.

The boys had an uphill battle to fight but worked very hard as they learned the game.

Playing a couple exhibition games prior, they showed up at provincials facing off against most teams who’d been playing together for three years.

The first game was against the SW Net Hounds of Edmonton. Had it not been for a slow third quarter, the boys would have come out on top.

They then played against NW Paul from Edmonton before a hard fought game against SBA Rosnau in the fifth place game.

The mini cobras ended up sixth in the province in their division having learned a lot about the game, experiencing some nail-biter moments and working hard.

The team consisted of Syler Sabey, Ben Baker, Briggs Baker, Ethan Hall, Zak Wright, Easton Wright, Henry Leishman, Kale Smith and Hayden McClung
