One dead, one injured, in collision between small vehicle, semi near Granum

One person is dead and another injured in a collision between a transport truck and a small vehicle near Granum.

The collision occurred Thursday, Feb. 8 at about  3p.m., with police responding soon after.

“It is a tragedy,” Sgt. Brian Mucha of the Fort Macleod RCMP said at the scene. “One person is deceased and one has sustained serious injuries.”

A Ford Fusion travelling southbound on Range Road 264, less than a half a kilometre east of Granum, entered Secondary Highway 519, that passes the Town of Granum.

The 20-year-old male driver in the Ford Fusion was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Road conditions included ice on road shoulders.

Owners of Granum’s only convenience store, next to Highway 519, called 911 immediately after the mishap which was so loud as to be heard at the store. A driver on Highway 519 was the first to stop and check on those in the Ford Fusion before emergency crews arrived.

An 18-year-old male passenger with serious injuries had to be extracted from the vehicle by firefighters from the Granum and Claresholm fire departments, and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Both occupants of the Ford Fusion were from Lethbridge.

The driver of the semi suffered minor injuries, and spoke to Fort Macleod RCMP Sgt. Brian Mucha at the scene.

Highway 519 was blocked for emergency personnel, vehicles rerouted through Granum by firefighters with the Granum Fire Department.
