Superintendent updates community on potential strike
By Sean Beaton, Superintendent, Livingstone Range School Division
Yesterday the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced that its members rejected the tentative agreement with the Government of Alberta.
This means that teachers are in a position to initiate job action on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025. While we anticipate this will be a province-wide, general strike, the specific details about job action have not been released. If the strike is province-wide, beginning Monday, Oct. 6:
• Teachers and school administrators will be on strike.
• Students will not be in class.
• All support staff will continue to report to work as usual.
• Livingstone Range School Division office will continue to be open as usual.
We know everyone is concerned about student learning. Instruction is paused during the strike, but once it’s resolved, teachers and schools will support students to get back on track. The school year calendar has built-in flexibility to ensure students receive the instructional hours they need.
Although we do not know how long the ATA strike will last, a strike ends when the Government of Alberta and ATA’s negotiating team reach a tentative agreement or when the Government orders teachers back to work and imposes an arbitrator or a settlement.
We understand that this is a complex issue and is a difficult time for staff, students, and families. We will continue to update our website at www.lrsd.ca/labourrelations and send emails to parents and staff to keep you informed.
