Highlights from the most recent Nanton town council meeting
By Jen Handley, Mayor of Nanton
Much was discussed at Monday’s council meeting – if you’re curious about what’s happening in our town it’s a great meeting to watch, some significant decisions were made!
Highlights include:
– A presentation from the principal and vice principal of J.T. Foster School – Mr. MacDonald and Mrs. Spencer. They spoke about the culture and changes to the school over the last couple of years.
– The Northwest Area structure plan public participation and survey results were presented to council. This is phase 4 of 7 – keep your eyes out for proposed conceptual plans and additional public feedback opportunities throughout the winter.
– The industrial area road upgrades were also discussed and a decision to proceed with Phase 1 was approved by council. Did you know the roads were not built to industrial standards? We need to upgrade those roads to protect our underground infrastructure and to be able to accommodate the weight of the trucks using those roads.
– The designs for the stormwater management rain garden at the Mile 56 visitor information centre were also released. Federal grant funded.
– An information brief on data centres was presented.
– It was decided to ask the Province for a traffic study on Highway 2 south to consider if a traffic light at 20th Street is needed.
– Council remuneration was also discussed for the next council resulting in a two per cent increase to their wages, the first increase since 2021, resulting in a $28 a month increase for the mayor and a $20 a month increase for councillors.
Issues at the wastewater treatment plant were also discussed under the operations report.
