Elementary school students learn about lacrosse

Students at West Meadow Elementary School learned more last week about Canada’s national game and the oldest sport in North America.
Jake Gillis of Elev8 Lacrosse was at the school throughout the week introducing students to lacrosse.
For many, it is their first exposure to the game.
“They always enjoy it,” said Gillis, adding there is another reason to get into the schools.
“It’s a chance to grow the game.”
He starts by introducing the basics of the game, and helping students get comfortable with the stick. They then learn about passing, shooting, and do some competitive drills to test their skills.
Gillis is perfectly suited to teach the game, because he brings a lot of experience.
Playing lacrosse since he was three years old, he grew up in the Elev8 program, ultimately earning a lacrosse scholarship to Long Island University.
“I got to live in New York for five years,” he said with a smile.
Gillis was drafted by the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League, and still hopes to play for the club.
However, he has joined Elev8 full time, and enjoys coaching.
“I’m loving it,” he said, adding he is considering returning to school to pursue an education degree.
