Cobra girls take fourth in home tournament

The Willow Creek Composite High School girls’ basketball team advanced all the way to the third place game of their home tournament this past weekend before finishing fourth.
Claresholm hosted the Cobra Classic on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15, welcoming teams from Coaldale, Coalhurst, Fort Macleod, Picture Butte and Pincher Creek.
The Cobras opened on Friday night with a solid 39-22 victory over Picture Butte.
Claresholm led 15-5 after one quarter, extended their lead to 22-11 by halftime, and led 29-22 after three quarters before cruising to that 39-22 win.
Scoring for the Cobras were Leilani Oakes with eight points; Kilee Lange and Jessica Mackin with seven points each; Addy Petersen with six points; Emilia Quinteros with four points; Tori Stonehouse with three points; Annaleigh Johnston with two points; and Hannah Leader and Kiana Starling each had a point.
The Cobras opened play on Saturday, with a tough 43-23 loss to the St. Michael’s Dragons of Pincher Creek.
Scoring for Claresholm were Emilia Quinteros with seven points; Kilee Lange and Jessica Mackin each had three points; and Annaleigh Johnston, Hannah Leader, Leilani Oakes, Addy Petersen, and Tori Stonehouse each had two points.
The results gave Claresholm second place in Pool B and a date in the third place game against the Prairie Winds Secondary School Wild of Coaldale who finished second in Pool A.
The Wild came out strong and never looked back, winning by a score of 81-33 to clinch third place.
Scoring for the Cobras were Jessica Mackin and Leilani Oakes with nine points each; Hannah Leader with six points; Addy Petersen with three points; Annaleigh Johnston and Tori Stonehouse each with two points; and Kilee Lange and Emilia Quinteros each had a point.
Emilia Quinteros was named the Cobras most valuable player of the tournament at the conclusion of the third place game.
