Principal of Stavely Elementary School bids fond farewell
By Rob Vogt
Leanne Watson has come full circle in her education journey.
The principal of Stavely Elementary School started her teaching career in Stavely and has finished it there.
She has accepted a position with the Alberta Teachers Association, and her last day was this past Monday, Jan. 5.
However, her last day with students was Dec. 19, capping an emotional final few days for the long-time principal.
Without her knowledge, the students and staff held a goodbye assembly for her on Monday, Dec. 16.
Then the community had its chance to say goodbye at the Stavely Community Centre when the school held its annual Christmas concert there on Dec. 18.
At the end of the concert, Jodi Husted of the school’s parent council, addressed the capacity crowd outlining how much Watson has meant to the school.
“You will be dearly missed,” she said. “Thank you for seven wonderful years.”
Once the standing ovation concluded, Watson addressed the community for the final time.
“I love this school and I love this town,” she said.
Watson started her career in 2017 at the former A.J. Nowicki School in Stavely. Over time, she essentially raised her two daughters Ella and Hannah at the school, as they attended from Kindergarten to Grade 6 in Stavely, but continued to help out at the school until they finished high school in Nanton.
“It’s my home,” Watson said of the school.
She said everyone has a lasting connection with the school.
“This school is as successful as it is because of all of you,” she said. “I really truly mean that.”
Watson noted Stavely Elementary School is the highest academic performing school in the Livingstone Range School Division.
“I’m really proud of you,” she said.
Watson also stressed the students made every day a joy.
“I’m going to miss you,” she said.
Watson then turned her attention to the staff and the parent council.
“All of my staff – you are fantastic,” she said.
“Parent council – you are outstanding.
“You do so much.”
The dedication and passion of everyone will carry the school forward.
“Stavely will always hold a special place in my heart,” Watson said.
