The Yellow Rose Futurity/Derby Barrel Race was another huge success this year.
The ninth annual event took place at the Claresholm Agriplex from May 3 to 5, kicking off on Friday night, May 5, with a benefit barrel race.
Organizer Elaine Watt said the benefit barrel race attracted 137 riders who raised more than $15,000, with all proceeds going to support the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Calgary Society. A silent auction raised more than $6,000, so the total amount raised was $21,662.
The futurity, which is for horses five years and younger, had 86 entries.
When the dust settled, Chelsea Moore of Crossfield was the winner.
The derby, for horses eight years and younger, had 97 entries and Taylor Manning of Thorsby was the winner.
The open had 377 entries and Taylor Manning rolled her time so she won the open as well.
That meant by paying a fee, she could use the time she recorded in the derby for the open.
Watt was impressed with the weekend, starting with the volunteers.
“They did their jobs so well,” she said.
Watt also commended all the riders, especially for the amount of money they raised for the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Calgary Society.
“It made me so proud of those girls,” she said.
