Willow Creek Composite junior prom under way for another year
Candidates hold successful fundraising tea and service auction
Junior prom has started for another year at Willow Creek Composite High School. Prom starts in Grade 11 where it is a program based on leadership, community and school service, explained JoAnna Sutter one of the prom advisors. “We hope it’ll prepare students for after they are done school,” she said, adding that scholarships often look for community involvement and leadership. Prom candidates will gain experience public speaking, including speeches on April 30, just a week before prom.
“It’s to take the fear that we all have,” Sutter said. This experience will help students when they go for job interviews. Another component is dance where candidates will learn a number of different steps and strut their stuff at prom. Sutter said learning to dance is not something most students have a chance to do.
Candidates also will go through an interview with judges and have to submit a portfolio essentially describing who they are and what they have done so far in life. Sutter stressed junior prom is not a popularity contest but instead encourages every student feel confident taking part.
“It’s open to everybody and anybody,” Sutter said. The first year is junior prom, culminating in the crowning of prom royalty. The second year, prom royalty take on leadership roles, leading and organizing school assemblies and representing the school at various community events. “They take a more active role,” Sutter said. The junior prom candidates also held a fundraising tea and service auction on Dec. 12, where they auctioned off their service such as housekeeping, wrapping presents, clearing snow and much more.
