It was an emotional Sunday night down at Stavely Arena as a hockey club and community paid tribute to three players who lost their lives in a motor vehicle crash on Feb. 2.
Family, friends, and supporters from across the hockey community gathered on Feb. 8 to pay tribute to the memory of Southern Alberta Mustang players Caden Fine, Cameron Casorso and JJ Wright at a tribute game against the hometown Stavely Spurs.
As the crowd quieted, the sticks, gloves and helmets of the three players were placed in their positions on the ice by their teammates.
Then words from the public address system broke the silence.
“We’ve gathered not just for a hockey game, but to remember and honour three teammates, friends and family members who meant so much to all of us. Tonight is about remembering who they are, what they gave to this community, and the love of the game we all share.”
Everyone then joined in a moment of silence to honour Caden Fine, Cameron Casorso and JJ Wright.
Afterwards, tributes were made to the players for everyone to hear.
“Caden Fine brought boundless energy, undeniable grit, and a sense of humour you never forgot – the kind that made you do a double take before bursting into laughter.
“His impact reached far beyond the ice.
“Caden carried an infectious smile and a positive spirit that lit up the rink and followed him everywhere he went, every single day. Caden faced every challenge head on, but it was his deep compassion and love for others that truly defined him.”
“Cameron Casorso played the game with dedication and a constant desire to grow – not only in his own skills, but in lifting up those around him.
“Every time Cam walked into the rink, he brought an energy that was impossible to ignore. He led by example, showing what it meant to work hard, care deeply, and always strive to be better, both on and off the ice.
“Cam’s passion followed him everywhere he went, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.”
“JJ Wright reminded us why we play – for the love of the game, for each other, and for the people who matter most.
“JJ played with heart and without fear, no matter the circumstances, showing a determination that inspired everyone around him. JJ’s love for the game was impossible to miss, and it’s something we will carry with us every time we step on the ice.
“JJ showed unwavering loyalty both on and off the ice. He stood up for the people he loved without hesitation, always ready to protect, support, and have everyone’s back.”
Daniel Fine, father of Caden Fine, and Chris Wright, father of JJ Wright, then walked on the ice and stood in the positions their sons would take for the opening face.
The starting line-up was then announced:
“At left wing, #21, Reece Orser.
“At centre, #22, Caden Fine.
“At right wing, #10, Tyson Tozer.
“Your left defenceman, #15, JJ Wright.
“Your right defenceman, #17, Parker Ma.
“And in goal, #32, Cameron Casorso.”
The tribute concluded with a ceremonial puck drop.
