Opa Kers Legacy Fund established for kids

By Rob Vogt
Chantal Roberts has fond memories of her grandfather Opa Kers and the good deeds he did for others.
“He was a gentle, hard-working man,” she said.
Opa Kers supported a family of 10. One day, he was selling oranges to raise money for food when he came across some starving children.
Without hesitation he thought of those children.
“The money he just made went to the kids,” Roberts said. “And that was my Opa – he did everything he possibly could for kids.”
To pay tribute to her grandfather, Roberts and her family have established the Opa Kers Legacy Fund for Kids.
The fund is a charitable initiative dedicated to nurturing the potential of every kid.
Inspired by Opa Kers’ lifelong commitment to giving back, the fund will support programs focusing on education, health, nutrition, creativity and wellbeing for children.
Moreover the fund is committed to transparency, accountability and measurable outcomes.
For that reason, the fund is its own entity.
“It’s 100 per cent transparent,” Roberts said.
It has its own account, financial statements are public, and there will be regular updates to donours and the public on the impact of its work.
There are several ways to get involved.
One way is to donate. Contributions are welcome with every donation going directly to supporting kids in need in the community.
Contributions can be dropped off at Meadow Creek Sausage and Meat Limited or transferred to opa.kers.legacy@gmail.com (no dashes or spaces).
Charity tax receipts can be issued for donations.
A second way is to partner and collaborate to expand the impact.
Community groups, businesses and individuals are warmly invited to partner with the Opa Kers Legacy Fund for Kids.
By collaborating with the fund, people can help broaden its reach and enhance the effectiveness of its support for children.
Partnerships are vital in empowering the fund to deliver meaningful programs and ensure more kids benefit from the resources, encouragement and safe spaces they deserve.
A third way is fundraising with Meadow Creek Sausage and Meat Limited.
In collaboration with Meadow Creek Sausage and Meat Limited, the Opa Kers Legacy Fund for Kids welcomes fundraising initiatives organized by local clubs and organizations.
These efforts are designed to benefit both the participating clubs and the Opa Kers Legacy Fund, ensuring all involved contributed to and share in the positive impact on children’s lives.
By working together on these fundraising activities, the fund’s reach and support for essential programs dedicated to children’s education, health and wellbeing can be amplified.
Another part of the Opa Kers Legacy Fund for Kids is the “Unsung Hero Award” with a $1,000 scholarship attached.
It will be presented to a Willow Creek Composite High School graduate moving on to post-secondary studies, who makes a difference.
“That was what my Opa was – an unsung hero,” Roberts said.
Application forms for the fund are available online, and Roberts encourages anyone to apply who knows a kid who can benefit from the fund.
“If it benefits a kid in our community, we want to hear about it,” she said.
Applications can be made anonymously, and all applications are strictly confidential.
