Basketball boys take second at Cobra Classic

The Willow Creek Composite High School senior varsity boys’ basketball team went all the way to the final of their home tournament.
The school hosted the annual Cobra Classic on Feb. 6 and 7, welcoming teams from Sparwood, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Olds, and Three Hills.
The Cobras opened on Friday morning, Feb. 6, with a 101-81 win over the Matthew Halton High School Hawks of Pincher Creek.
Scoring for Claresholm were Briggs Baker with 25 points; Henry Leishman with 20 points; Easton Wright with 15 points; Jax DeJong with 14 points; Logan Hurlburt with 12 points; Syler Sabey with 11 points; and Mario Calderon and Rylen Guitton with two points each.
The Cobras then faced the Sparwood Spartans on Friday night, winning by a score of 85-77.
Scoring for Claresholm were Briggs Baker with 24 points; Jax DeJong and Henry Leishman with 17 points each; Logan Hurlburt with 13 points; Easton Wright with nine points; Syler Sabey with three points; and Rylen Guitton with two points.
The two wins gave the Cobras first place in Pool A, and a date with the F. P. Walshe Flyers of Fort Macleod in the tournament semi-final on Saturday morning.
The Cobras took control early and prevailed by a score of 81-40.
Scoring for Claresholm were Logan Hurlburt with 13 points; Briggs Baker and Grayson McClung with 11 points each; Mario Calderon with nine points; Youseff Ehab, Henry Leishman and Easton Wright with eight points each; Jax DeJong with five points; Kael Smith with four points; and Rylen Guitton and Mika Haydu-Tutu with two points each.
Awaiting the Cobras in the final were the Sparwood Spartans, who defeated Olds in the other semi-final and were anxious for a rematch with Claresholm.
The teams went back and forth before Sparwood won by a score of 98-85.
Scoring for the Cobras were Briggs Baker with 28 points; Jax DeJong with 23 points; Logan Hurlburt with 19 points; Easton Wright with 10 points; Henry Leishman with four points; and Rylen Guitton made a foul shot.
