Local hockey players have chance to play in Florida

Just over a year ago, Alonso and Tomas Quinteros were just learning the game of hockey, and now they are on the verge of representing their native country of Chile in an international tournament.
Alonso, 12, and Tomas, 10, have been invited to represent Chile on their Under-12 team at the Latam Cup, from Aug. 17 to 20 in Florida.
Hosted at the Florida Panthers Iceden in Coral Springs, Florida, the tournament features more than 50 teams participating in over 100 total games across seven divisions to showcase the growing influence of hockey in non-traditional hockey countries and regions.
“It’s a good opportunity,” said Felipe Quinteros, the boys’ father.
Alonso plays centre and, in 12 games with the Claresholm Under-11 Tier-6 Thunder, he scored 39 goals and added six assists for 45 points to lead the team.
“I’m excited to play,” he said.
Alonso also has two goals for the tournament – he wants the team to win the Latam Cup and he would like to win most valuable player.
Tomas is a defenceman who also suited up for the Claresholm Under-11 Tier-6 Thunder this past season, playing in 12 games, recording seven assists.
“I really want to represent Chile,” he said, admitting he is a bit nervous. “It’s exciting.”
In order to attend, the Quinteros family needs to cover the costs of hotel, flights, food and other expenses necessary for their participation.
The family would like to travel to Florida from Aug. 14 to 25 in order to prepare in advance, by meeting the rest of the team and practising, then staying a few days after the tournament.

Their goal is to raise between $5,000 and $8,000.
“We appreciate the support,” said Felipe Quinteros. “Everybody is so happy for them.”
