Search and Rescue items stolen while training

While out on life-saving training, the Grande Prairie Technical Search and Rescue (GPTSR) team was the victim of the theft of “multiple items essential for emergency response.”
The theft occurred at the 17.5 KM Canfor Bridge Wednesday, July 10, between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.
“It is truly disheartening to have items stolen from an emergency response organization dedicated to saving lives,” said Sean Mowat, Safety Director (GPTSR).
“Despite this setback, we remain committed and ready to respond to any emergency situation.”
The stolen gear includes a swift water drysuit, two chest rigs used to carry gear, navigational gear (GPS), and other personal belongings valued at about $4,000.
“Thankfully, no specialist equipment was stolen – that is equipment the team has fundraised for and uses on searches and rescues,” said Clayton Dirksen, GPTSR vice president.
“However, it is extremely unfortunate that our member’s private equipment, which is just as essential and valuable in terms of dollars and team effectiveness, was stolen.
“As an all-volunteer organization, the members are very passionate about the role and do provide some of their own navigation, safety, and other equipment.”
In a media release, GPTSR said, “this loss is not just financial but deeply personal, affecting the very tools they rely on to save lives.”
GPTSR says it is looking for any information from people if they noticed anything unusual or saw someone not in a Search and Rescue uniform near their vehicles on July 10.
