Claresholm Cobras win peewee football thriller
By Rob Vogt
The Claresholm Cobras peewee football team sent their fans home happy with a thrilling win under the lights last week.
The Cobras hosted the Cardston Cougars on Thursday, Sept. 26, winning by a score of 14-7 at the Snake Pit on the Willow Creek Composite High School field.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Cougars struck in the second period with a 109-yard touchdown run with just 11.2 seconds left in the half to go into intermission with a 7-0 lead.
The Cobras responded partway through the third quarter.
After the Cobra defence forced Cardston to turn the ball over on downs on the Cougar 35-yard line, Claresholm quarterback Cohen Smith ran the ball down to the Cardston four-yard line.
On the next play, runningback Levi Penner crashed into the end zone for the touch down, knotting the score at 7-7.
The score stayed 7-7 at the end of three quarters of play, setting up an exciting final quarter.
The Cobra defence again stopped Cardston on a third-down gamble, giving Claresholm the ball on the Cougar 32-yard line.
This time Smith threw a screen pass to Thomas Baird, who then reversed direction and ran 20 yards for the go-ahead touchdown and a 14-7 lead.
After that, the stout Cobra defence shut the door on any Cougar comeback, as Claresholm went on to the 14-7 victory.
The next home game for the Cobras is this Thursday, Oct. 3, when they host the Pincher Creek Mustangs at the Snake Pit at 6 p.m.
