Soup Bowl starting to serve next week

Brenda Halliwell has a passion for helping people.
The native of Claresholm, and daughter of Pius and Mel Wilhauk, is trying to bring some of the experience she earned on Gabriola Island to her hometown.
Halliwell is organizing “The Soup Bowl”, which has its first date on June 13 at the Claresholm Social Centre from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“The Soup Bowl” offers homemade soup made at an approved kitchen to anyone. There is no charge, but donations are gratefully accepted.
Halliwell wants to offer everyone a “safe harbour” where people can come, enjoy some soup, visit, and not be judged.
“It’s for everyone,” she said.
Another goal is to bring awareness to healthy eating and nutrition.
That’s why “The Soup Bowl” has a garden, utilizing two beds at the community garden next to St. John’s the Evangelist Anglican Church
Ultimately, she would like to offer cooking classes, with the next event being a chilli cook-off in the community.
“Feeding people is close to my heart,” Halliwell said, adding she has experience addressing community issues such as poverty and food security.
“It’s become a real passion of mine.”
So Halliwell invites everyone down to the Claresholm Social Centre for the first setting of “The Soup Bowl” on June 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
If you are interested in volunteering or making a donation please contact Halliwell at h.brenda@shaw.ca or phone/text 250-668-9841. She estimates the weekly expenses to be $100. You can learn more by following “The Soup Bowl” on Facebook.
