New volunteer resources coordinator starts

If you have ever wanted to volunteer at one of the health facilities in Claresholm, now is your chance.
Janessa Reimer started as the new volunteer resources coordinator for Alberta Health Services for Claresholm and Vulcan on Jan. 24, and she is excited to recruit volunteers and create new volunteer opportunities at Claresholm General Hospital, the Willow Creek Continuing care Centre, and home care.
“There’s a shortage of volunteers,” Reimer said.
That is due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, health guidelines continue to ease as groups can now come to the continuing care centre.
Reimer would like to bring in school students and the community.
“Residents need interaction,” she said.
Some of the volunteer opportunities include resident visitation, reading to residents, working at the Tuck Shop, and bingo nights.
The recreation staff will also need volunteers, with activities such as handing out ice cream Fridays and portering residents to and from events.
There are pet visits as well, with animals who behave.
The process starts with a volunteer application which is available online.
Once an application is filled out, Reimer will see it, and take the volunteer through the process of an interview; onboarding, which includes training, a confidentiality agreement and more; and orientation.
She said there are a lot of reasons to volunteer.
For young volunteers, ages 12 and older, they can earn high school credits for volunteering, gain experience, and a reference when they apply for jobs.
They can also see a different part of the community, and explore if health care is a career they would like to pursue.
“It’s a great opportunity to see what’s out there,” Reimer said.
For older volunteers, it is a chance to brighten the lives of residents and get to know them.
Some volunteers have family in the facility and it is a good chance to visit them as well.
Overall, Reimer encourages everyone to think about volunteering.
“It brings joy to our residents,” she said. “(And) it’s always great to give back.”
