Council grants mayor unpaid leave of absence
By Rob Vogt
With the mayor of Claresholm securing the nomination for the United Conservative Party in the riding of Livingstone-Macleod for the upcoming provincial election May, town council has granted her an unpaid leave of absence.
The Town of Claresholm issued a statement on social media on March 28 announcing that at the last regular meeting of Claresholm town council held Monday, March 27, council granted Chelsae Petrovic, Mayor of Claresholm an unpaid leave of absence from March 28 until May 30, 2023 as she is the UCP candidate for Livingstone-Macleod in the next provincial election.
While Petrovic is on leave, the deputy mayor will be acting in her place.
The Town of Claresholm has a Deputy Mayor schedule that was adopted by council at its organizational meeting after the last election.
At this time, the deputy mayor is Coun. Brad Schlossberger until July 1, 2023.
In Petrovic’s place, appointments have been made to replace her on boards and committees by other members of council.
If Petrovic is successful in her bid to be the next MLA for Livingstone-Macleod, per Alberta’s Municipal Government Act, she would be disqualified as mayor and be forced to resign, resulting in a byelection for the town.
