Cobras take fourth at volleyball Zones

The Willow Creek Composite High School senior varsity girls volleyball team went into the Alberta Schools Athletic Association 1A/2A South Zone tournament ranked fourth and that’s how they ended up.
The Cobras hosted the 1A/2A South Zone tournament, which determined this area’s two representatives for the provincial championship tournament, which runs from Nov. 16 to 18 in Whitecourt.
They welcomed teams from Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Nanton, Fort Macleod, the Crowsnest Pass, Coaldale and Vauxhall.
The Cobras opened play on Thursday night, Nov. 16 sweeping their best-of-three match against Matthew Halton High School of Pincher Creek by scores of 25-15 and 25-15.
They were back on the court Friday afternoon, Nov. 17, where they swept Crowsnest Consolidated High School of the Crowsnest Pass by scores of 25-14 and 25-20.
They concluded round-robin play on Friday night, losing in straight sets to Immanuel Christian of Lethbridge by scores of 25-14 and 25-19.
The results left Claresholm second in Pool B and set up a match Saturday morning, Nov. 18 against J.T. Foster of Nanton.
The Cobras took control early, and went on to win the first set by a score of 25-18.
The Knights re-grouped and gave Claresholm all they could handle in the second set before falling to the Cobras by a score of 25-23.
With the straight-set victory, Claresholm moved on to the semi-finals and a date with the Vauxhall Queens.
In a set that went back and forth, Claresholm finally emerged with a 27-25 victory.
Vauxhall rebounded to take the second set by a score of 25-15, then took the third and deciding set by a score of 15-11 to advance to the championship final.
The Cobras advanced to the bronze medal game against the F.P. Walshe Flyers of Fort Macleod.
The Flyers took the opening set by a score of 25-19, then completed the sweep with a 25-21 win in the second set to take the match and the bronze medal.
The Cobras went home fourth to go along with regular season and post-season league championships.
