It was the second straight tournament championship for the Willow Creek Composite High School junior high “A” boys’ basketball team.
After winning a tournament in Pincher Creek last weekend, the Cobras travelled to F.P. Walshe School in Fort Macleod on Dec. 8 and 9, where they won the championship there too.
In their first game, against F.P. Walshe, they had a well balanced game and won 77-18.
Jax DeJong had 18 points; Briggs Baker had 15 points; Grayson McClung had 12 points; Easton Wright had 10 points; Edward Franz had 10 points; Brayden Lamb had six points; Oliver Gatewood had four points; and Youseff Ehab had two points.
In the semi-final game against the Coalhurst Trojans, the boys came out very strong and built a quick 20-point lead.
Consequently, they were able to play all of their younger players a lot, winning 57-26. The scorers were Briggs Baker with 19 points; Jax DeJong with 13 points; Easton Wright with nine points; Brayden Lamb with seven points; Grayson McClung with seven points; Ryker DeJong with four points; and Oliver Gatewood with one point.
In the final, The Cobras played a tough Mountain View team, who were smaller than Claresholm but played very scrappy.
After the first quarter the Cobras were up 19-15. The boys dug in on defence, their shots started to fall, and their post players overwhelmed them down low.
The Cobras were able to win 57-26. The scorers were Briggs Baker with 23 points; Jax DeJong with 21 points; Grayson McClung with 13 points, as well as 14 rebounds; and Easton Wright with six points.
