Terry Fox Run raises more than $5,000 for cancer research

It was another successful Terry Fox Run as more than 30 participants took to the streets to raise more than $5,000.
The weather looked like it may not cooperate on Sunday, Sept.16, but as the run approached, the rain stopped and the weather cleared – just in time for the event to begin.
Coun. Gaven Moore brought greetings from the Town of Claresholm.
“I know Terry ran in rain and snow,” he said, as he looked to the sky. “Think of him on this journey.
“How lucky we all are to not have to go through what Terry did.”
Deb Lozeman has been organizing the run for 16 years, and paid tribute to all the participants gathered in front of the fire hall.
“If it wasn’t for all of you coming out, we wouldn’t keep doing this,” she said.
Claresholm was there from the start, holding runs every year the event has existed, dating back to 1981.
“If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t be going 38 years later,” Lozeman said. “If it wasn’t for his dream 38 years ago, we wouldn’t raise all these millions for cancer research.”
She pointed to the back of the Terry Fox Run t-shirt, where it says, “Courage.”
“I know you’ve all got courage like Terry,” Lozeman said.
Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in 1980, with a goal of running across Canada and raising one dollar for every Canadian for cancer research.
His journey ended just outside Thunder Bay, and he died a few months later, but his dream lives on.
