Fibre arts show coming up this Saturday

The Claresholm Community Centre is set to come alive this weekend with the sights of quilting, weaving, rug hooking and much more at a fibre arts show this weekend.
The Claresholm Arts Society is putting on their third annual one-day fibre arts and quilt fair at the community centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.
Admission is $10 for a show that will feature displays of quilting and other assorted fibre arts such as rug hooking as well as information on topics such as thread.
Vendors will also be on hand, selling fabric and other fibre arts supplies.
“There will be lots of things to look at and places to shop at,” said Carmelle Steel of the arts society.
One of the highlights of this year’s show is that prizes will be awarded for quilts.
If someone wants to enter a quilt, there is a form to fill out that will be attached to the entry.
That form is currently available on the Facebook page “Claresholm Arts Society”, and forms will be available at the door as well to fill out.
Quilts can be dropped off on Wednesday and Thursday at Linderman Law Office downtown next to the post office, or Friday at the community centre.
There are four categories: modern; wall art; open; and peoples’ choice.
An independent panel of judges will determine the winners of the judged categories, who will earn a ribbon and cash prize.
The peoples’ choice award will be voted on by the public, with ballots given out at the door.
There is a $10 entry fee but that includes the price of admission.
Another highlight this year is the raffle for blocks.
To enter, quilters make blocks from the pattern that is on the Claresholm Arts Society Facebook page.
They bring those to the show and each block they make is an entry.
One name will be drawn from all the entrants who wins all the blocks.
Steel describes it as a ready-to-go quilt top. All the winner has to do is sew together the blocks.
The hope is the winner will bring the assembled quilt to the show next year.
Steel explained the reason for the show is simple.
“It’s to provide a variety of fibre arts that are already being done in Claresholm,” Steel said, adding if anyone has an interest in a particular art the show tries to promote the group doing that art.
“We want to build those groups we have,” she said.
The fibre arts show also attracts a lot of visitors from out of town.
Steel invites everyone to come down to the community centre and check out the fibre arts show.
“Come to see some great quilting and hear about other fibre arts that are done in the community,” she said.
