Students scaring away hunger

The Grade 6 leadership team at West Meadow Elementary School is undertaking a variety of activities to help their community. In October in conjunction with Halloween, the 45 or so members of the leadership team collected 126 kilograms of nonperishable food items for the Claresholm Food Bank through their “Scare Away Hunger” campaign.
Students were divided into teams to visit individual classes to talk about the campaign, in addition to putting up posters around school, having a collection box at the front, and having it mentioned in daily announcements. A group of students delivered what they collected to the food bank on Nov. 29.
The leadership team has already been busy in December too. They decorated the school Christmas tree in the foyer, and are now preparing to host a Christmas movie at the school on Dec. 21.
The event will serve as a thank you to parents and the community for all their support with the school’s new playground. In the new year, the leadership team will hold a bake sale for Valentine’s Day, and a talent show. So far this year, school activities the leadership team has been involved in included the Remembrance Day service; Terry Fox Run; and a jack o’lantern contest that raised $265.
