Verle was born on July 29, 1931, in Claresholm, the first daughter of Jay and Stella Little. She grew up on the farm and attended school in Stavely. In June 1950, Verle married Doug Johnson of Stavely. They farmed together and worked at the family service station. In 1958, they moved to Carmangay, where Doug worked at an elevator and later at Johnny Hubka’s garage, while Verle kept the family home running smoothly. In 1965, they moved back to Claresholm. Doug and Verle bought Henson Motors and ran the business until Doug’s passing in 1983. Verle often mentioned how she was the “GOPHER” at Henson Motors, constantly having to “go for” this or “go for” that.
Raising four girls kept Verle and Doug very busy. They loved camping, spending time with their large family, and having many adventures with friends. Verle was a mother figure to many over the years. It was common for them to have extra kids running around the house. Verle had a true passion for playing the piano and did so entirely by ear. For many years, she played in a local band and entertained at numerous dances in the area. Over the years, Verle drove farm equipment, school buses, and various vehicles for Henson Motors. Verle also worked at her daughter Linda’s boutique, which complemented her love of clothes. She enjoyed playing crib with family and friends, always having amazing luck and frequently winning. However, her favorite pastime was teasing and laughing with her grandkids, which she did right up to her last day.
Many who knew Verle probably experienced at least once the classic “Verle Cane Shake.” It surprised some, was expected by others, but always brought Verle joy.
Verle is lovingly remembered by her daughters: Leslie Johnson of Cochrane, Luella (Bob) Uhl and Linda (Buck) Thompson, both of Claresholm, and Lorae (Jeff) Ryan of Stony Plain. She was a proud grandmother to Kris (Jeff) Bruketa, Barry (Anna) Gunderson, Evan (Caitlin) Johnson, Mariah (Damon) Johnson, Shaylee (Zach) Menzies, Shari (Kurtis) Thomas, Shayne (Zahra) Ryan, Jayce Ryan, and Kylen Ryan. Verle also had six great-grandchildren and another great-granddaughter on the way. She is survived by her sister, Vesper Deering, brother-in-law Bob (Linda) Johnson, sister-in-law Sheila Johnson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
