We are broken hearted to announce the passing of Leona Vondrasek (Schuler), January 10, 2026, at the age of 74, after a very brief illness from pancreatic cancer.
Leona was born July 17, 1951, to Ray and Gene Schuler, in Natal, BC. When she was young, the family moved back to the Schuler farm outside Claresholm, Alberta. She and her five siblings were raised on the farm, and she always attributed her excellent work ethic to the years of helping her family run a mixed farm. After high school she attended Mount Royal College, and then, while working a summer job at Shell Oil, she found her calling and never looked back. After several years of employment with Shell Oil, Leona ventured out to help form a new company. She, along with partners Kent Milan and Meenaz Rajan opened and operated Digital Seismic Services in 1985. This company was instrumental in offering services for accurately analyzing seismic data. Leona was a very caring and selfless partner and employer, who was very much admired by her clients, employees and partners. In 1996, Leona left the business to follow her dreams. She had met Marcel Vondrasek, and after marrying him she became an active partner in their business, Vondy Renovations of Calgary. She became Marcel’s right-hand woman, and with her help the business expanded and thrived.
In 2007, Leona and Marcel packed up their lives and the business and moved to an acreage in West Creston, which was a dream come true for them. Leona described this as the best and happiest time of her life. Leona loved nature, especially flowers, and became dedicated to her flower beds and vegetable garden. She loved harvesting and preserving the fruits of their labor, and she made good use of their produce in her cooking.
Leona loved crafting and creating beautiful things. She found a true talent in resin pour painting, creating beautiful and colourful art. She also loved cats, fishing, hiking and camping, as well as visits with friends and neighbours around the fire pit.
Leona was a cheerful and optimistic person, never complaining, and always putting others ahead of herself. She volunteered with the West Creston Volunteer Firefighters and served on the board of the West Creston Community Hall for 11 years.
Leona is survived by Marcel, her loving husband of 29 years. She also leaves to mourn her passing her two stepdaughters Kathy (Chris) Wiehler and their two children, Aiden and Jada, and Kristyna Vondrasek.
She was the best big sister to siblings Donna (Ron) Priest, Glenn (Lynda) Schuler, Coryl Schuler, Myrna (Rob) Gouin, and Dave (Paula) Schuler. She also leaves to mourn 13 nieces and nephews, and 14 great nieces and nephews, all of whom adored her.
She will be deeply missed but will live on in our hearts and memories.
At Leona’s request, there will be no service. Her ashes will be scattered at a later date by immediate family.
