August 15, 1955 – May 20, 2024
It is with profound sadness that the family of Raymond (Ray) Andrew Weisensel announce his passing. Ray passed away peacefully at the Claresholm General Hospital on May 20th, 2024, at the age of 68. His quick wit and one-of-a-kind sense of humour were present until the very end, and will always be remembered.
Ray was born on August 15, 1955 in Calgary, Alberta to Mathias and Velda Weisensel. Ray was the first of three boys, older brother to Glen and Randy. In 1960, the family moved to Claresholm, where Ray would spend the rest of his years. Ray was a spectacular athlete, participating in many sports, including fastball, tennis, golf, football, volleyball, billiards, broomball, and bowling.
Ray was actively involved in the Claresholm Thunder organization, and held the role of Trainer for the senior men’s hockey team for many years. He was better known at the arena as “Razor”, “Razor’s Edge”, “Sugar Ray”, or “RAW”. In the post-Thunder era, Ray resumed his Trainer role with the Bantam and Midget teams, coaching his nephew, Ryan. In recent years, Ray could be seen cheering on all the local teams at fields, arenas, and diamonds. His love for sports remained a constant throughout his life.
Ray had a passion for the outdoors, and spent many hours hunting and fishing over the years. Some of Ray’s best memories were days spent in the Alberta foothills with his nephew, uncles, cousins, and friends. His recollection of routes, trails, and landmarks through the foothills was impressive.
Ray was a unique kind of family man. Never married or having kids of his own, he was a permanent fixture in the lives of his nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters-in-law, and mother. Never missing a life milestone, celebration, or holiday event, Ray was always present, and brought with him a sarcastic comment, or twelve. Card tables will always miss Ray, and the game will never progress quite as quickly without his “encouragement”.
Ray is lovingly survived by his brothers Glen (Jean) and Randy, niece Nicole Larkin, nephew Ryan Weisensel (Kelsea), great-nephew Austin Larkin, great-niece Oakley Larkin, their father Damon Larkin, as well as many other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Ray was predeceased by his parents Mathias Weisensel and Velda Weisensel, and his sister-in-law Cathy Clarke.
A Celebration of Life for Ray will be held on June 1, 2024 at 4:00PM at the Claresholm Social Centre. The family invites you for a brief tribute and refreshments. Please stop by anytime between
4:00 and 8:00 P.M. to share your memories about Ray.
