Elaine Stewart of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at the age of 88 years. Elaine was born in Fort McLeod, Alberta on April 3, 1934, the only child of Ed and Agnes Pitt.
She was raised in Claresholm and married her high school sweetheart, Bob Stewart in 1955. They lived in several Alberta towns before calling Calgary home in 1967. They enjoyed a happy 58-year marriage before his passing in 2014.
Elaine graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education degree. She went on to obtain a Specialist Certificate in Special Education at the University of Calgary and spent much of her teaching career helping children who had learning disabilities. After her retirement, she was an active member of the Alberta Retired Teacher’s Association and volunteered for many years as secretary with the Knox Church Foundation.
Elaine accomplished much through her life, but was particularly proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. She and Bob never missed a grandchild’s hockey game or band concert, or daughter’s horse show. Elaine loved spending time with her extended family and friends. She and Bob took multiple trips with dear friends, including cruises in the Mediterranean and river cruises through Europe. They also enjoyed attending plays and the orchestra.
She will be most remembered for her ability to connect with individuals of all backgrounds. She truly cared about their thoughts and stories and made everyone feel welcome and special.
Elaine is survived by her daughter, Laura; son Doug and his wife Lakshmi; 3 grandsons, Ian, Colin, and Curtis; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at Knox United Church (506 – 4th Street S.W, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., with reception to follow.
